In the race for California insurance commissioner, voters are choosing between two termed-out state assemblymen: Democrat David Jones of Sacramento and Republican Mike Villines of Clovis.
The position is not well known, but the task is large. California's elected insurance commissioner investigates insurance fraud, earthquake and flood insurance policies and ensures insurance companies are solvent and are able to pay claims. Most important, he or she guards against companies that would jack up insurance rates for owners of homes and motor vehicles. The next insurance commissioner will also confront a new responsibility — national health care reform in California.
