At Cliff Cottam Insurance we provide information that will help you make informed decisions when purchasing your auto policy. We ran across a great article from Insurance Tips For U that answers some common questions.
How to save money when buying auto insurance
1. Shop around : Companies are in the business to insure drivers. Understandably they all want to insure good drivers and if you are one shop around to find the company that will offer you the best rate.
Drivers with some driving infractions should also shop around. All companies are not the same and you will find that some are more forgiving than others when it comes to insuring risky drivers. It does pay to shop around.
2. Avoid Over-Insuring: Depending on the value of the car you drive you may not need certain types of coverage, such as collision coverage for an old car. Some times drivers with older cars only need liability insurance.
This protects you if you for injury liability to others but does not cover damage to your own car. There is no point in paying say a $1000 for collision coverage every year if your car is only worth about $1000.
3. Deductibles : If you want to reduce your insurance premiums then select a higher deductible. Go for a lower comprehensive deductible. Comprehensive coverage is for damages such as windshield replacements.
4. Small Claims Filing : Sometimes it makes sense not to file for small claims, such as damage to your vehicle that is about the same or slightly more than your deductible. You need to decide for yourself in such cases if its worth paying for the damage yourself or filling a claim that will be on your insurance record for three years or so.
5. Multiple-line discounts : If you are a home owner insure your home and car with one insurance company. Make sure you ask for a discount as most companies offer multiple-line discounts.
